Netscape has selected VeriSign as the premier provider of e-commerce security technology for Netscape customers, including America Online shoppers. The two companies plan to integrate VeriSign’s digital certificate services with Netscape client and server products, while launching a co-branded Netcenter Security Center Web site.
Under the terms of this new agreement, Netscape and VeriSign plan to collaborate on what the companies termed “the next generation of secure e-commerce and communication products and services,” including customized portal services, secure messaging features, and AOL-compatible e-commerce features.
“Deploying secure e-commerce applications in a timely manner is becoming a fundamental imperative for enterprises all over the world,” said Tony Suarez, director of First Union National Bank Certification Authority. “Netscape and VeriSign are creating a valuable online resource and a set of interoperable products and services that will ensure that companies and individuals have the information and tools needed to interact safely and confidently online.”
The companies expect their new joint initiative to accelerate development and of new solutions for online retailing, financial services, virtual private networking, customer service and supply-chain management.
The new Netcenter Security Center is intended to serve as a one-stop information and service resource. It will offer information on digital certificates and other Internet security technologies, and will provide developer kits for enabling secure e-commerce applications using the new Netscape/VeriSign platform. The site is scheduled to launch by the end of March, while product and service integration between the two companies has already begun.
As the Premier Provider of digital certificate services for all Netscape products and services, VeriSign will receive prominent positioning throughout Netscape’s Netcenter, and will be listed as the premier provider of digital certificate services in all Netscape product configuration and registration processes.
