Dell, Microsoft & SBA Address Y2K Issues

According to the National Federation of Independent Businesses, approximately one third of the small business sector has not yet taken action to address a potential Y2K computer glitch.

Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq: DELL) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) have teamed up with the US Small Business Administration (SBA) to help change the situation.

In a recent online seminar, Breakfast with Dell, the Round Rock, Texas-based hardware provider joined software giant Microsoft and the SBA to discuss several facets of Y2K preparedness. Y2K experts from all three represented organizations discussed problems that might arise and potential solutions.

Included in the discussion was a list of potential scenarios, such as the failure of internal systems rendering a small business unable to take orders, ship products to serve its customers, and a subsequent loss of productivity and revenues.

The experts also highlighted the possibility that the systems of a company’s business partner(s) could fail, thus leaving a small business potentially unable to receive parts and manufacture products.

Among the actions advocated during the online seminar was company system readiness, along with company product compliance, business partner readiness, the development of contingency plans, test and audit programs and planned end-of-the-year activities. Additional information can be obtained through the official Web site of either the SBA or Microsoft.

How Y2K-Ready Is Microsoft?

According to Charles River Media, the Y2K bug will have an impact on many users of Microsoft operating systems and applications. A new Charles River book by JD Consulting — Y2K Solutions for Microsoft Products — details how Windows 3.1, 95, NT, along with Access, Excel, Java SDK, Outlook, PowerPoint, SiteServer and Word (among others) have “Y2K compliance issues.”

“Microsoft has attempted to resolve the issues, but diagnosing the problem and then navigating their Web site for the proper solutions can be time-consuming and frustrating,” commented David Pallai, president of Charles River. “Solutions are available, but you need to know where to find them and how to use them.”

Continua, the e-commerce marketing division of EnRol Corp. (OTC BB: ENRL), has been busy introducing its Time Bomb Product Suite to international markets including Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan and the UK. “The response we have had to-date from international business and government leaders who understand the magnitude of the Y2K issue and opportunity has been tremendous,” noted Martin Matthews, Continua’s president and CEO.

Matthews added that “these same individuals also recognize how the company is leveraging this urgent demand for a Y2K solution, to empower Continua with a massive client database for ongoing ‘permission marketing’ at virtually no cost.”
