StarMedia Network (Nasdaq: STRM), a leading online network for Spanish and Portuguese-speaking audiences, will now offer its users direct access to online grocery shopping. The network surprised some observers by forgoing well-known players like Webvan and Peapod in favor of LatinGrocer, an online grocery service that caters to the same target audience.
The partnership includes an exclusive marketing agreement that will give Starmedia’s users direct access to LatinGrocer’s catalog of products. LatinGrocer will be featured on Starmedia’s shopping channel, and its products will be promoted across the entire StarMedia network. In addition, Starmedia and LatinGrocer will work on cross-promotional efforts, which may include online advertising, as well as television, radio, print and billboard promotion.
“This new alliance highlights StarMedia’s serious commitment to the U.S. Hispanic market and its leadership in the development of e-commerce and content for Spanish speakers in the U.S.,” said Fernando Espuelas, CEO and chairman of StarMedia. “Our relationship with LatinGrocer enables our users to shop for Latin products which can’t be found at other online stores, but that are an essential part of the Latin culture.'”
LatinGrocer joins a variety of online retailers that are featured in StarMedia’s shopping channel. These companies include barnesandnoble.com, CDNow and Viajo.com, a travel site targeted to the Hispanic market. According to a survey conducted by the Laredo Group last December, more than 54 percent of StarMedia users in the United States have made an online purchase.
