Internet and Intranet-centric business solutions provider WebTrends Corp. (Nasdaq: WEBT) has released the latest version of its security management, analysis and reporting solution, adding support for Linux to the cross-platform software.
The WebTrends Security Analyzer product, which now also works with Solaris, includes some 180 new tests in the updated version 3.0 release that, according to WebTrends, checks for “the industry’s most potentially damaging threats.”
The product also features an agent architecture that works to improve security analysis by distributing processing tasks to allow security analysis and reporting across multiple network devices.
“A critical part of optimizing a company’s eBusiness initiatives is ensuring their e-commerce and Web enabled applications remain available and secure,” commented Glen Boyd, President and CTO of WebTrends. “WebTrends Security Analyzer is known for its comprehensiveness and ability to promptly provide the latest security solutions.”
New Features
According to the company, security tests that are automatically deployed to Linux, UNIX and Windows customers through WebTrends’ AutoSync technology detect and recommend fixes for more than 650 different potential vulnerabilities.
New product features include the Enterprise Scheduler, which enables faster processing and multiple, simultaneous report generation through support for multiprocessor and multithreaded systems, and the Platform for Open Security Testing (POST) that utilizes open format security tests for vulnerability detection.

The Enterprise Reporting Product
Earlier this year, Web Trends released the Enterprise Reporting Server, which is a real-time, Web traffic analysis solution designed specifically for high traffic sites running Linux.
The product was included in the October, 1999 release of Red Hat Linux 6.1. According to Paul McNamara, general manager of Red Hat’s enterprise business unit, “having (this) solution available for Red Hat Linux users responds to our customers’ needs and demands for enterprise applications.”
Using a multithread analysis engine to track Web site activity, the WebTrends server provides personalized reports by way of a consistent browser-based or Microsoft Word interface. Report tables and graphs are available to users, utilizing daily, weekly, monthly and annual summaries.

IDC Linux Forecast
According to International Data Corp. (IDC) projections, commercial Linux shipments will increase 25 percent per year through 2003, compared with a 10 percent rate for all other client operating environments. Many industry analysts — including IDC — are also speculating that server-side endeavors will be an area of dramatic growth and importance.
“It is clear that Linux has a strong future as a server operating environment,” stated Dan Kusnetzky, Program Director for IDC’s Operating Environments research programs. “Its ability to support Web-based applications is well proven.”
