Leopard Copies Vista, iPhone Warning, HP’s Profitable Green Strategy, Product of the Week

Apple -- and most technology companies -- has abad history with respect to generation one products. As I've mentioned before, HP is now largely staffed by ex-Apple people, and I had a long chat with one last week about why Apple, in particular, is this way According to him --...

Computer Problems Baffle ISS Flight Controllers

Overall, though, the space station was designed to accommodate a staff of 21, so life support for just three regular staff should not be any undue burden on the station's systems, he pointed out Outside H...

Computer Crashes Bedevil ISS

The Road Ahead for Outsourcing Suppliers: Higher Costs

First, the industry enjoys support from government agencies and educational institutions eager to promote the creation of export-oriented jobs. Financial subsidies are often available at the beginning of a call center's lifecycle and are helpful in reducing debt load. Canadian governments and educational institutions are implementing coordinated educational and labor market policies to help ensure that staff with requisite skills are ready and able to meet expected job requirements, especially in the Maritime Provinces...

When a Board Member Should Worry

Lack of Transparency In my opinion, for a board to adequately fulfill its fiduciary duties, there must be complete transparency between management and the board. This means that in-house staff should be available to answer relevant questions from the board. If for some reason you feel that management is not only withholding information from you, but is also denying you the necessary access that would clearly increase your knowledge of important inner workings of the company, you as a board member should certainly consider this a red flag. A friend of mine is on the board of several major companies. He tells me that after each board meeting the independent directors meet without management present in order to have an open and frank discussion of the company and its management. Any secure executive will permit and encourage this type of meeting. In fact, my friend is allowed to "roam" the corporate halls to speak to mid-level executives from time to time. This type of communication gives him a good sense of the corporate culture and the inner workings of the company. A note of clarification: I'm not talking about micromanaging a company. It certainly is not the role of the board to get involved in normal workaday details. However, the board should have easy access to the company in order to fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities.

Why Not Web Analytics?

To this end, 27 percent of best-in-class companies are devoting full-time staff specifically responsible for managing analytics and delivering the results to the right people within their organizations in understandable reports. Increasingly, companies are also looking outside their organizations and hiring consultants to help establish analytics programs and recognize returns on their technology investments...

Dell to Decimate Workforce

In fact, the past week saw nearly as many tech-related layoff announcements as during the entire fourth quarter of 2006, noted John Challenger, CEO of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The first quarter of 2007 saw nearly three times the job cuts as the last three months of 2006, suggesting an upward trend in headcount reductions, he told the E-Commerce Times. Though each decision to cut staff is driven by different factors, the upward trend could suggest tech companies are girding for harder economic times...

Network Security, Part 2: NAC Moves Up the Architecture

Employing network and device scans, Cisco's solution evaluates all devices that attempt to access a network for compliance to internal security policies before access is granted. Noncompliant devices are placed into a quarantine area where users' devices undergo automated repair processes, eliminating a lot of work that would have to be done by network and information technology staff...

Google Mixes It Up to Widen Search World

"Finding the best answer across multiple content types is a well-known hard problem in the search field," Google staffers David Bailey and Johanna Wright wrote on The Official Google Blog. "Besides that, we wondered if we had become too big a company to pull off a project this complex."

What’s Motivating the Military’s Selective Web Site Ban?

"Soldiers should be free to blog their thoughts at this critical point in the national debate on the war in Iraq," said EFF Staff Attorney Marcia Hofmann "If the Army is coloring or curtailing soldiers' published opinions, Americans need to know about that interference."

The Executive Summary: The Key to Raising Capital

There certainly is some truth to this opinion. However, there are situations when a company is seeking to raise capital and wants to put out "feelers" to determine the possibilities of a successful capital raise. In such an instance, I see no reason why the executive staff can't prepare a summary outlining the business and the opportunities that it presents...

Microsoft Fends Off Zombies, Worms and Bugs With Patch Tuesday

Companies should take the Patch Tuesday reports as proof they need to hire or assign somebody to be in charge of network security, he said. "Being aware of the latest security patches is a must."

Ten Commandments of Branding

The most common and least understood marketing barrier facing outsourcing service providers is the absence of a strong brand. Most brands associated with IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) companies are chosen on the basis of criteria relevant to where outsourcing firms are based, rather than where they intend to do business ...

Giving Nostalgia a High-Tech Spin

Instead of raising a paddle, they push an on-screen button to make a live bid. A staff member on the gallery's side signals that bid to the auction floor and than transmits the next bid back to online participants. Thus, much of hubbub of the traditional auction floor is gone, and so is some of the excitement...

Journalism 2.0: Power to the People

At the same time -- and perhaps in part as a result -- traditional news outlets are struggling. Audiences are shrinking and profits are drying up. Many are cutting their editorial staffs in response, or asking reporters to become "backpack journalists" who can do everything -- shoot video, take photographs, write stories, the works...
