On balance, it's hard to see how this isn't a runaway success for Sun. After all, the company got everything it wanted, plus $1,950,000,000 in found money. But, somehow, most of the press managed to see it as McNealy surrendering to Microsoft. Rationally, I don't see how anyone could read even just the press release and believe this, but then I don't believe in sharks with unmet emotional needs either...

Commenting on the latest settlement in a press release, Intergraph president and CEO Halsey Wise said: "We are pleased to have resolved our patent issues with AMD. We believe this agreement is in the best interests of our shareholders based on all of the circumstances, including the scope of AMD's alleged infringement and damage base."
Google has said the idea for Gmail stemmed from complaints by a Google user about existing Web e-mail programs. In a press release announcing the service, Google co-founder Larry Page noted that the user complained about difficulty in staying under the usual four-megabyte limit. The company claims it will offer nearly unlimited storage -- up to a gigabyte -- for average users...
The tone and timing of the press release, dated April 1st, initially sparked speculation that it could be an elaborate April Fool's Day hoax. But the release pointed to an extensive frequently asked questions (FAQ) page about the service, whose launch was first reported Wednesday.
The tone and timing of the press release, dated April 1st, led some to speculate that it could be an elaborate April Fool's Day hoax. But the release pointed to an extensive FAQ (frequently asked questions) page about the service, whose launch was first reported Wednesday, and such a prank might be risky for a company said to be biding its time before an initial public offering.
The announcement follows last summer's news that Yahoo had partnered with BT to offer a service called Yahoo! UK Plus, delivering Internet "essentials" to BT Broadband customers. Those offerings included an award-winning junk e-mail control feature, instant messaging service, multiple e-mail accounts, parental controls, digital photo storage and antivirus software. According to a BT press release, the Yahoo Network reaches 42 percent of the UK Internet population...

In another example of homegrown Linux adoption, a Hong Kong company called Culturecom Holdings introduced a new CPU known as the V-Dragon in July 2003. According to a July 17, 2003, press release, the V-Dragon has what the company labeled a "V-Dragon Midori Linux embedded architecture," including an embedded Chinese character-generating engine and integration with Midori Linux. IBM is listed as a codeveloper of the V-Dragon chip...
Thus last year's federal tort reform package focused on medical liability in the press releases but tried to trim off both extremes in the law: limiting liability, raising the bar for compensation and clarifying assumptions about the relative power and expertise of players in the provider-customer relationship...
Napster, which on Thursday announced a deal with Penn State University to deliver its premium service to students there, called its first week's results "strong" at 300,000 songs sold. However, Apple broke out the "five times" claim with a press release on its iTunes progress the same day...
As an example of just how serious Oracle is about Linux, DiDio cited the company's US$100 million campaign launched earlier this year to encourage third-party developers to create Oracle applications that run under Linux. "This is real," she said. "It's not just a me-too, lip-service press release."
While the word "Neanderthal" isn't included in U.S. Department of Education press releases, Secretary of Education Ron Paige made a similar point earlier this year. When introducing the department's latest technology plan, Paige noted, "Education is the only business still debating the usefulness of technology" -- which might be government-speak for, "If your boss questioned your need for a laptop, wouldn't you call him a Neanderthal?"...

Clever hardware Apple can do; it's the software that's the problem. Not that Apple's Mac OS X is bad code, mind you. With its Unix underpinnings and its ease of use, the operating system can make a claim to being both reliable and extremely easy to manage -- someday. The software currently doesn't have the demonstrated "five 9's" reliability of the enterprise computer players; for that, OS X probably needs a few more years, not to mention a few more powerful press releases.
Brandt also finds fault with the Google News service, saying that the company lists press releases on its news site without labeling them appropriately. "What if Google started accepting corporate press releases for Google News and the relevance ranking was based on how much the corporation paid Google?" he said...
