Dell Computer Corp. announced today that it has updated and enhanced www.gigabuys.com, its online superstore. These new features, along with recently added Dell Auctions, Dellnet portal and Dellnet ISP, are part of an aggressive campaign to eliminate online shoppers ‘ needs to look elsewhere for products and services.
“Today’s enhancements are part of Dell’s continuing efforts to be a one-stop source for a customer’s technology needs,” said Dave Hood, vice president of Dell’s Web business division.
When it launched its Gigabuys.com Web site in March, analysts saw it as a renewed push by the number one direct computer distributor into the consumer market. Currently, about 15 percent of Dell’s revenue comes from consumer purchases — with 85 percent coming from businesses.
Dell is looking to be doing 50 percent of its business online by the end of 2000.
Open Dialogue With Consumers
Dell apparently plans to keep its customers in the loop. Dell Spokesperson Bryant Hilton told the E-Commerce Times, “We made those changes based on what we heard back from our customers, and we’ll continue to evolve the site going forward.”
New Features
Besides offering 30,000 computer-related products such as software, printers, digital cameras and personal digital assistants, the new enhancements on the Gigabuy site fall into three categories: Product service, product recommendations and education.
Existing customers who own a Dell system will be given their own service number, which can be punched in to receive listings of compatible software products for their computer.
Gigageeks Service
Dell is beefing up the content on the site, offering third-party recommendations on products from PC Magazine and ZDNet. There will also be a new “Gigageeks” service, making product selection recommendations available by e-mail. Additionally, if a Dell customer wants to learn about digital imaging, home networking or other new technologies, the site will now provide tutorials for these subjects.
While industry analysts acknowledge the improvements as a good move by Dell, they also point out that other portals offer similar services to consumers.
