Fatbrain.com (Nasdaq: FATB), a retailer of professional and technical books, announced two major alliances on Tuesday. Fatbrain.com, which just changed its name from ComputerLiteracy.com, was selected as the preferred online bookstore for Microsoft’s relaunched developer resource site, MSDN Online, and the bookseller also signed an exclusive deal with popular discussion group site Deja News.
Fatbrain.com has to hope that these two major deals will raise brand awareness quickly. Shares of Fatbrain.com have surprisingly been down in two consecutive sessions after the news.
Under the terms of the deal with Microsoft, Fatbrain.com and MSDN will created a co-branded bookstore for the more than one million Microsoft developers worldwide.
“Fatbrain.com’s experience in serving the developer community makes its world-class online bookstore a natural fit for the new MSDN Online program,” said Sue Bohn in the developer relations group at Microsoft. “Fatbrain.com allows us to offer a wide-range selection of recommended resources to our active developer community.”
Fatbrain.com To Provide Recommendations on Deja News
Fatbrain.com’s deal with Deja News involves providing customized personal book recommendations. This feature will be provided to users conducting forum searches on the Deja News computer/technology and money channels.
“The Deja News alliance provides us with an enormous opportunity to reach an extremely desirable segment of the Internet audience,” said Dennis Capovilla, vice president of business development at Fatbrain.com. “The computer/tech channel is the most popular Deja News channel, and these forum participants tend to be some of the most seasoned and passionate Internet users.”
Deja News, which allows users to search more than 45,000 discussion forums, is a free service that receives more than six million page views a day.
“Establishing a relationship with Fatbrain.com makes a lot of sense for us. Our consumers are knowledge-seekers and information gatherers,” said Chris Thomas, vice president of sales for Deja News. “Providing them with information on books and other resources that specifically pertain to the subject matter they are already interested in, and then offering them the opportunity to purchase these books instantaneously is a tremendous value-added proposition.”
