Legal Super Store Subpoenas Attorneys to Shop Online

Does time spent shopping on the Internet count as billable hours? Attorneys across the country now have a new dilemma to wrestle with as Attorneys Online Inc. debuts its new shopping site, America’s Legal Super Store. Attorneys Online, a subsidiary of The Publishing Company of North America Inc. (Nasdaq: PCNA) has launched the site as part of a strategic alliance with online shopping mall Value America.

With an estimated $130 billion (US$) up for grabs in the legal services market, the Legal Super Store is looking to get and keep legal shoppers with 18 product departments and more than 1,200 manufacturers represented.

As the site’s domain name — www.lawmiles.com — suggests, the site also offers frequent flier miles as a purchasing incentive. LawMiles accumulated on the shopping site can be redeemed for air travel, cruises, hotel rooms, rental cars, vacations, merchandise or up to a two percent cash refund. The site also offers Value Dollars that accumulate with purchases and can be applied to future shopping sprees on the site.

Deep Pockets

The Legal Super Store is designed with the fat wallets of some of America’s highest wage earners in mind. “The fact is, in addition to business purchases, attorneys purchase the same products and services we all purchase…they just buy more of it,” Attorneys Online President Peter Balise said. As a longtime directory publisher, the Publishing Co. of North America has access to attorneys, law firms and bar associations to drive traffic to the site.

Highlighting the sites’ shopping offerings are computers and software, with each getting a spot on the home page. However, additional shopping pages range from the expected office machines and supplies to home and personal goods including clothing, toys and jewelry.

A fairly thorough content section may also attract visitors. While shopping is clearly the site’s focus, will also find a large reference section with indexes of legal subjects and courtroom and trial procedure. Thanks to its publishing company parent, the site also includes directories of bar associations, legal organizations and law schools. Professional development and legal business services are also available online.

The site has a link to lawlinks.com, a web portal designed for attorneys, and it provides consumers a link to The Legal Source, a directory of legal experts and service providers.
