Linux.Com Serves 25 Million

Linux.com, a web portal established and run by VA Linux Systems, reports that it received more than 25 million hits in its first month of operation. Three of those 25 million came during the site’s very first day of going live.

The Web site — with the coveted domain name — is run with a mission “to enrich the Linux community by providing a centralized place for individuals of all experience levels to learn (and teach) the power and virtues of the Linux Operating System.” In offering Linux.com as a resource, VA Linux Systems claims to “have never forgotten what Linux is really about,” freely offering support and a wide range of information.

Currently, the site utilizes about 10 volunteers, who work between 15 and 40 hours per week, for every paid staffer. “Linux.com exemplifies the spirit of community involvement around this movement,” commented Dr. Larry Augustin, VA’s president and CEO. “We are preparing for continued Linux demand and mainstream adoption of the popular operating system (OS).”

Less and less a stranger to the mainstream, VA also announced this week that it has been selected by Fortune Magazine as one of the top “cool” companies of the year. According to Augustin, “The Fortune Magazine honor is one of the most highly coveted awards a new company can receive, and we are thrilled that a Linux company was among the top recipients of the honor.”

Business Case Studies in Linux

Bynari Systems recently posted a Web site entitled Linux in Business – Case Studies, in order to supply data regarding the Linux OS penetration into the business community. Users can access information on companies and organizations such as Burlington Coat Factory, Cisco Systems, Lucent Technologies, Sony Worldwide Networks and the US Postal Service.

The company offers its own Linux-based e-commerce solutions as well. Bundling MySQL Database with an Apache Web Server and the Red Hat Linux OS, Bynari offers a “Total Ecommerce” package.
