Pervasive Software (Nasdaq: PVSW), a provider of e-commerce application development solutions, has released a version of its Tango 2000 Application Server for Linux.
The Tango 2000 development studio, which enables developers to create and deploy database-driven Web applications, is being developed for the Caldera OpenLinux, Red Hat and SuSE Linux distributions. First shipments are anticipated before the end of the year.
A visual programming environment for designing, building and testing Web applications, the product also enables scalable cross-platform deployment on Linux, Macintosh, Solaris and Windows NT.
“The cross-platform Tango Development Studio allows Web developers to quickly create Web applications on Windows or Mac OS, and then deploy those applications in any combination of operating environments, including Windows NT, Sun Solaris, Mac OS and now three of the leading distributions of Linux, without having to recompile code,” commented Greg Hemstreet, general manager of Pervasive’s Tango business unit.

In the fall, Austin, Texas-based Pervasive moved its SQL 2000 server for developing e-commerce applications onto the Linux platform. At the time, the company had announced its intention to extend Linux support to all of its development products.
The database and Web application solutions provider received ServerProven certification through IBM (NYSE: IBM) to run its products on the Netfinity server series. IBM administers its ServerProven Solutions program in order to test software compatibility with Netfinity, and in the summer of 1999, expanded the scope to include vendors supporting Linux.
Big Blue tapped KeyLabs, an independent organization, to conduct the ServerProven certifications. “A growing number of our customers are considering Linux for their business applications,” explained Tom Figgatt, Linux segment executive for the IBM Netfinity Servers group, indicating that taking the step to work with Linux was an important one for IBM.
The SQL 2000 database engine is included in Tango 2000 Application Server for Linux product. Additionally, Tango 2000 can connect directly to Oracle and other databases that reside on different platforms.
A Wireless Penguin
In other Linux news, PalmWorks (OTC BB: PMWK) has selected Penguin Computing hardware and Red Hat Linux software to provide the Internet server platforms that will power its online services and applications.
“When we set out to determine our choice of equipment and software upon which to build our service infrastructure, we knew we had to have the utmost performance performance, reliability and scalability,” stated James T. Voss, PalmWorks president and CEO.
“With this purchase of Penguin Computing and Red Hat products, our infrastructure will now be able to accept more than a million subscribers.”
According to International Data Corp. (IDC), Linux was the fastest-growing server OS in 1998, growing more than 212 percent and capturing more than 17 percent of all server OS shipments. Linux boasts more than 12 million users worldwide.
