Red Hat Introduces E-Commerce Server

Red Hat Software, Inc. has announced the availability of its e-commerce Apache Web server, with encryption capabilities and e-commerce software from Hewlett-Packard, among others.

“The Red Hat Linux E-Commerce Server is an ideal solution for Internet service providers (ISPs) and small businesses that would rather focus their attention on sales than their Web server,” commented Tim Buckley, Red Hat’s Chief Operating Officer. “The Red Hat Linux E-Commerce Server levels the e-business playing field with symmetrical multi-processor support (SMP) for up to four processors, security, scalability and stability for businesses of any size.”

The new server product features the Red Hat’s Linux 6.0 package, along with an RSA Data Security 128-bit encryption engine, an application CD and both complete and trial versions of several e-commerce software packages. Apache ASP and DAV modules for development, the Netscape Roaming module, the Squid proxy and cache server and a Web server log are also included.

Red Hat’s e-commerce server is available through the company’s information and e-commerce Web site. The package will additionally include a guide to getting started, an installation manual, a source code CD and the critically important tech support, available by way of telephone and e-mail.

The Future of Linux in the Server Market

International Data Corp. (IDC) has indicated that last year, Linux was the fastest-growing server system, accounting for 17 percent of all shipments. Between now and 2003, overall shipments of Linux are expected to increase 25% per year.

“It is clear that Linux has a strong future as a server operating environment,” stated Dan Kusnetzky, Program Director for IDC’s Operating Environments research programs. “Its ability to support Web-based applications is well proven.”

Linux Training For E-Commerce Pros in the Real World

Red Hat this month also announced a partnership with Global Knowledge Network, an independent IT training company, to advance the open-source cause through a new exams-based certification program.

Global Knowledge agreed to provide what Red Hat describes as “real-world, hands-on training and certification,” in 15 cities throughout the US. The first courses will begin in September of this year.

Registrants from beginning to network professional levels — who are actively interested in moving to open-source solutions — will be required to demonstrate performance capabilities in such areas as diagnostic testing and troubleshooting, installing and configuring Red Hat Linux, performing essential administration and setting up common network (IP) services.

“Network and system administrators who want to learn the Linux-based systems, further develop their internetworking skills and achieve Red Hat’s highly credible certification have been asking Global Knowledge for this offering,” commented Greg Roels, Global Knowledge vice president. “We’re responding with the highest quality, real-world Red Hat Linux training for today’s internetworking, Internet and e-commerce professionals.”
